The Umbrella Rooms,

London

In this class we’ll move into taking the technique to text, layering in circumstances, relationships and actions.
Sanford Meisner famously referred to the text as ‘being like a boat that floats on a river’ and then asking the question: ‘what dictates the movement of the boat?’ The answer of course is ‘The flow of the river’. This analogy underscores the importance of repetition in an actor’s journey towards bringing the text to life – not through manipulation or assumption-  but through genuine listening, sustained connection and impulsive responsiveness.
In this class we will introduce various ways and means of exploring ‘The Boat and the River’ by spontaneously introducing written words into the flow of repetition, experiencing how both the text and its meaning can be truly brought to life in wholly unexpected ways.
**Requirements: Not a class for absolute beginners – you must be proficient in repetition to take part in this class.
